Weston’s Kennels is owned by Phil Cannon and Dave West, long time hunters and friends. Hunting with good dogs of different breeds has been an inspiration but the German Shorthair became our breed of choice. Through our passion for dogs and in-depth knowledge of canine genetics and behavior, we have developed a top line of German Shorthair Pointers.

Phil’s father was a well known English Pointer and English setter breeder/trainer in the Sand Springs/Tulsa, Oklahoma area in the 1950’s. Phil learned his respect for the hunting breeds from his father both as a breeder/trainer and hunter.  His father gave him the gun he uses today, a Browning A-5 20ga. when he graduated from Tulsa University in 1962. He learned that by showing a dog what you want (teaching) with a soft touch, rather than with harsh treatment, you could obtain a more positive level of training. His father also taught him that there are NO shortcuts in the teaching stages that would allow you to shorten or more quickly advance to the conditioning stages of training no matter what type of conditioning was going to be used.  

As a long time pet owner and lover of all animals, Dave is a professional dog trainer and veterinary technician. Dave is a member of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers (APDT) whose mission is to enhance the human-dog relationship by educating trainers, other animal professionals, and the public; advocating dog-friendly training.

We strongly believe we should never stop learning new and better ways to communicate what we want with the dogs. We also believe the foundational training is everything. With that in mind, our training programs are designed around time tested fundamentals while at the same time using advanced techniques that work with your specific dog.  No two dogs are alike and training must fit the individual dog to accomplish the goals the owners have.
